Rudolf Liemberger

27.12.1937 – 1988

Rudolf Liemberger, also known under the pseudonym “Max,” initially drew human figures — at the prompting of Navratil. These figures, generally placed in the middle of his drawings, gradually became more geometrical as time went on; then, in 1963, he began to cross them out with great vehemence and force. The effect of this dense cross-hatching, which involves cutting across and covering up the contours of the motif, is a total concentration on the middle of the drawing. In the process, the figurative aspect — such as the human figure, sun, moon or a house — often becomes entirely lost.
