gugging inspires! from bowie to roth

Unmistakable art for over seventy years - Art Brut and the Gugging artists

The fascination of Gugging's art can be traced back directly to its protagonists: August Walla, Oswald Tschirtner, Johann Hauser, Heinrich Reisenbauer and Johann Korec, to name just a few of Gugging's artists, are among the most important representatives of Art Brut. They have been creating their unmistakable art for over 70 years.

brut favorites.! feilacher’s choice

Johann Feilacher presents his personal favourites - contemporary art, tribal art and artefacts - at the end of his tenure at museum gugging.

After almost four decades of exhibiting Art Brut artists with a focus on art from Gugging and 16 years as artistic director, Johann Feilacher is curating his last show for museum gugging in autumn 2022. His personal favourites from Art Brut, Contemporary Art, Tribal Art and Artefacts will be on display. The extensive catalogue also goes into the history of museum gugging, its aims and previous exhibitions since its foundation in 2006. brut favorites.! not only presents masterpieces of Art Brut. Johann Feilacher once again demonstrates how the juxtaposition of (seemingly) opposites can lead to discourse and dialogue.

connected - marianne maderna im dialog mit den künstlerInnen aus gugging

HUHUMAN is the name Maderna gives to the flat hanging figures made of fluorescent Plexiglas, which in the exhibition “connected” meet masterpieces by the Gugging artists. The figures show recurring archetypal behavior patterns and form a world theater. The apotropaic, the warding off of disaster as an ancient function of art is the purpose of these works. The unsparingly and exaggeratedly reproduced observations of the Gugginger are, like the HUHUMAN, a mirror as well as an admonition. With an essay by art historian Eva Badura-Triska and an interview with the artistic director of museum gugging, Johann Feilacher.

visualized dreams...

Three Art Brut artists who immortalized their dreams in their artworks are the focus of this publication: the Swiss artist Ida Buchmann (1911-2001) and two Artists from Gugging, Johann Fischer (1919-2008) and Johann Korec (1937-2008).

Ida Buchmann's works are characterized by the song lyrics, which she sang aloud while painting. Johann Korec, on the other hand, was inspired by dreams of love and documented these in his paintings. The world how it should be, or how he wished it to be, is reflected in Johann Fischer's text-laden drawings. All three developed an individual written language, which became an integral part of their work. They also share their prominent position within Art Brut, their works being represented in renowned public and private collections and international exhibitions. The richly  illustrated catalogue includes essays by Nina Ansperger, Johann Feilacher, Nina Katschnig and Anke Wiedmann.

oswald tschirtner.! it's all about balance.

Oswald Tschirtner, one of the best known and most successful artists from Gugging, would celebrate his 100th birthday in 2020. In his oeuvre, created from 1971 to 2006, abstracted representations of humans - the unmistakable "cephalopods" - form the core of his art. A reduced formal language with black lines and some color accents characterizes the fragility and poetry of his graphic work. On the occasion of his 100th birthday, the first comprehensive monographic book on the artist illuminates the most important positions and creative periods of the artist Oswald Tschirtner.

In 1970, the first exhibition of works by what would become the Artists from Gugging was held in a Viennese gallery. It marked the beginning of the exemplary rise of a group of representatives of Art Brut in the art world. After around five decades, the surrounding circumstances have changed completely – many of the Gugging Artists are world-famous and there is a museum dedicated to their work. In addition to the history of the Artists from Gugging, this lovingly designed volume brings together more than 300 works of art from almost five decades. Special attention is also paid to the artists who have been able to develop at the art center in Gugging in recent years. These include Laila Bachtiar, Leonhard Fink, Johann Garber, Johann Hauser, Helmut Hladisch, Rudolf Horacek, Arnold Schmidt, Günther Schützenhöfer, Jürgen Tauscher, Oswald Tschirtner, Karl Vondal, August Walla and many others.

philipp schöpke

Philipp Schöpke's enigmatic and bizarre body of work is undoubtedly among the most interesting artistic oeuvres created in Gugging. His fate is exemplary of all those Art Brut artists who went unnoticed during their lifetime due to their position on the margins of society. Johann Feilacher recognized the exceptional nature of Schöpke's work early on and promoted his potential and oeuvre. In doing so, he laid the foundation for a reassessment of the artist, whose life and work are presented on a large scale for the first time in this volume. Thus, two decades after his death, this book and exhibition enabled the (re)discovery of Philipp Schöpke.

This book was published on the occasion of the exhibitions johann garber.! tinkerer and master painter and karl vondal.! erotic at museum gugging from September 7, 2017, to January 7, 2018. It is dedicated to two contemporary Gugging Artists: Johann Garber and Karl Vondal, whose artistic work is united by the evocation of paradise.

Johann Garber's (born 1947) diverse creations fascinate us with their exuberant abundance. His pen-and-ink drawings in clear black and white transport us into the worlds of humans and animals. The main design elements are ornament and pattern, and he also covers his objects with these.

Karl Vondal's (1953-2024) art focuses on erotic fantasies, which he stages within various settings like a director. Collage-like pictures made of glued-together paper and  motifs cut out of his own drawings are supplemented with a narrative layer and form the core of his artistic work.

johann hauser ... i am the artist!

A man draws a rectangle that turns out a little crooked. Or is it his creativity that makes him change the source image? Johann Hauser's career, which was to make him one of the greatest Art Brut artists of all time, began as simply as that. Arnulf Rainer called him "one of the best drauftsmen"; for Peter Pongratz, Hauser became the teacher who showed him what art was. Johann Hauser, who came to Gugging in 1949 and would remain until his death, was discovered by Leo Navratil and introduced to artistic expression by copying the drawings of other patients. His works were first published in 1965 and exhibited regularly from 1979/80 onward. This book provides insight into the artist's life and work.

Leo Navratil, the legendary founder of the Gugging Center for Art Psychotherapy, was not only a tireless supporter of his "artist-patients," who are now world-famous as representatives of Art Brut, he also had a very personal relationship with many Artists from Gugging. His "guest book" from the 1960s and 1970s, published for the first time as a facsimile copy, bears witness to this: In it, numerous Gugging Artists such as Johann Hauser, August Walla, Oswald Tschirtner and Rudolf Liemberger, as well as visitors such as Alfred Hrdlicka and Franz Ringel, immortalized themselves with their own drawings and contributions.

Impressive portraits by this Italian artist.

The Italian artist Adria Sartore paints young girls in an old masterly manner. Her special focus is on their facial expressions. She captures various emotional expressions, amplified by the girls' body language. Adria Sartore presents the face as a mirror of the soul and a reflection of our fantasies. Her paintings leave ample room for interpretation and possess an impressive expressiveness that consciously defies current trends in contemporary art.

Adria Sartore, born in Genoa in 1969, studied philosophy and aesthetics in Genoa as well as the Brera Academy of Fine Arts in Milan. She has received numerous awards and had many solo exhibitions.

Staged photography by Mathias Braschler and Monika Fischer.

Chinese farmers or American lawyers or the world's most famous soccer players immediately after a match: During their travels around the globe, Mathias Braschler and Monika Fischer photograph people in their surroundings, within the contexts of their lives. In the center we find the individual identity, depicted artistically. The subjects present themselves proudly, shedding their inhibitions, revealing themselves as they are. Through the intervention of staging, the photographers succeed in capturing individuality in a profound manner.

Mathias Braschler was born in Aargau, Switzerland, in 1969. Since 1994, he has worked as a photographer for magazines and journals; his first photo book, "Madison Avenue," was published in 1999.

Monika Fischer was born in St. Gallen, Switzerland, in 1971. She studied Germanic and Romance languages as well as scenography, and she works as a dramaturge at the Zurich Opera. Both live in New York and Zurich.

Universe-end: the monumental work on the life and oeuvre of an exceptional artist.

August Walla is one of the most globally renowned artists of Art Brut. His entire life was a long process of creation. The largely independent body of artistic work that emerged is completely distinctive and incredibly diverse. This extensive monograph presented in four volumes reflects this versatility. It includes reproductions of his works, texts and documents about his life, Walla's actionism, his photography and environmental art, facsimiles of his letters, writings and sketchbooks. Texts by Dr. Gisela Steinlechner, Gerhard Roth, Nina Katschnig, Margit Zuckriegl, Silvie Aigner and Helmut Zambo complement this monumental work.

Catalogue of the exhibition shown at museum gugging from November 10, 2011, to March 4, 2012.

The work of Johann Korec (1937-2008) is of great painterly and "kalli"-graphic quality. Clear contours are combined with color and often revised. The text, which holds special significance for the artist and defines a large part of his works, remains visibly present throughout. Writing and text are significant for Korec – he aimed to communicate something to the viewer in every painting, from erotic thoughts and experiences to his love for the circus or animals.

The catalogue for the exhibition at museum gugging presents a wide selection of works from the early and late years of the artist. It is complemented by a biography of the artist written by Johann Feilacher and an account about his life by Nina Katschnig, both of whom knew Johann Korec for decades.

With a contribution by Peter Baum.

The French painter and passionate letter writer Gaston Chaissac (August 13, 1910–November 7, 1964) significantly influenced his colleague Jean Dubuffet, who initially classified Chaissac's works as Art Brut, but later revised his opinion. Throughout his life, Chaissac was unable to make a living from his art, as he was an outsider who had no access to the art scene. It was only after his death that he was recognized as an important artist, and he was presented at museum gugging with 125 works, drawings, collages, paintings and painted objects – totems.

Two artists who lived and worked in Gugging are presented in the book accompanying the "duo.!" exhibition at museum gugging: Anton Dobay (1906–1986) and Oswald Tschirtner (1920–2007).

Anton Dobay's works, primarily executed in pencil, colored pencils and wax crayon, were rarely free creations: Inspired by Leo Navratil, he mainly drew from models. In just ten years, he created around 400 works before his energy dried up forever. This is the first comprehensive presentation of his oeuvre. Oswald Tschirtner, winner of the Oskar Kokoschka Prize, is represented through his largest-format works: Canvases measuring two by six meters, works that he never saw in their entirety while he was creating them because he had only partially unrolled them as he worked on them on a small table. These images demonstrate the artist's ability to translate his mostly small-format drawings into any dimensions using pen and ink.

With texts by the editor Johann Feilacher, who curated the exhibition at museum gugging, and Leo Navratil, who supervised the artists.
